Abstract
Gas pressure regulating cabinets are core components of urban gas distribution systems, and their safe and stable operation is critical to both residential gas supply and public safety. This paper examines a large-scale incident in which numerous pressure regulating cabinets were shut down within the service area of a gas utility in western China. It analyzes the causes of such shutdowns during extreme windy conditions, identifying rapid atmospheric pressure fluctuations and short-term temperature drops triggered by severe winds as the primary factors. By elucidating the underlying mechanisms through the fundamental relationship between atmospheric pressure and gauge pressure, the study proposes targeted preventive and responsive measures, offering practical guidance for enhancing the resilience of gas pressure regulation equipment to extreme weather and ensuring a reliable urban gas supply.
